Famous Fiddler In A Fankle

''We just felt like a nice troot for our tea,'' says fish fancier and Niel Gow impersonator, Pete, ''so we invited Jamie Jauncey along to row and thought we'd play a few tunes while we were waiting for the rise.''

Pete Clark:  tea, tunes and troots

Those tunes are a mix of traditional and modern Scottish spiced up with continental classics and Jazz standards.  Pete, Gregor and  Jamie are all veterans of the concert and ceilidh circuits.

Organizer of the annual Niel Gow Festival in Dunkeld, Pete Clark is best known for his interpretations of the music of the 18th Century fiddle legend, Gow.  He also tutors fiddle at the RSAMD and runs weekly fiddle classes at the Taybank, Dunkeld's famous music pub.

Over the years, Pete has collaborated with artists including Rod Paterson, Dougie MacLean, Trilok Gurtu, Mike Oldfield, Nazareth, Rab Noakes, the Scottish Ensemble and the RSNO.  Recently he's teamed up with guitarist Jack Evans and cellists Wendy Weatherby and Ron Shaw.

To date, Pete has released six solo albums.  With so much on it's small wonder that the fiddler and fanatical fisherman gets his lines crossed from time to time.

Anchors Aweigh For Ace Accordionist

Virtuoso box-player Gregor Lowrey got his first accordion when he was six.  By the age of 14 he was dazzling dance-goers with his spectacular renditions of Scottish and Mussette tunes.

In the eighties, he busked around Scotland and Europe, before settling for a short time in Ireland.  He honed his unique playing style in bands such as Rusty Nail, Blackeyed Biddy, Cantychiels, Clan Terra and today, Oban-based The Shoes with a repertoire ranging from Pat Metheny to Bach.

He also travels widely with ensembles visiting Europe, Tunisia, Azerbaijan, the Middle East and Indonesia.  He has recently released The Game's A Bogey with his long time musical collaborator, guitarist and piper Stevie Gillies.

Based in Dalavich, Argyll, Gregor still finds time to cast a canny fly upon the waters.

'Rowlocks To Rowing' Says Keyboard King

Like Gregor Lowrey, Birnam based Jamie Jauncey also played in Scottish dance bands as a teenager, before moving to London where he made records as a singer-songwriter.  He also played piano, guitar and accordion with 60's legend Peter 'Where Do You Go To My Lovely' Sarstedt.

Now a regular on the ceilidh and session circuit he plays keyboard with Shooglenifty spin-off, The Funky String Band (Luke Plumb, Angus Grant and Australian singer / guitarist Peter Daffy), and The Birnam Quartet (Luke Plumb, Angus Grant and Anna-Wendy Stevenson).

Jamie and Pete used to play regularly in the Jauncey Brothers Band, which Jamie ran with his brother Simon.  A musician by night, Jamie writes books by day.  He hates rowing about as much as fishing.
